German Ambassador Celebrates International Pretzel Day

Did you enjoy a pretzel on April 26th?

If so, you celebrated International Pretzel Day.

On this occasion, Dr. Peter Reuss, German Ambassador to the Czech Republic, highlighted one of Germany’s most iconic culinary traditions. The pretzel, renowned for its golden-brown crust and distinctive shape, originates primarily from southern Germany, particularly from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. And it is precisely this unique shape that is linked to an intriguing story. According to an old legend, a baker was once given a final chance to save his life. He was ordered to bake a loaf of bread “through which the sun could shine three times.” It was no easy task, and the baker struggled for a long time to find a solution. Eventually, he came up with a brilliant idea: he created a pastry with three openings. The sun could shine through all three, earning the baker not only his pardon but also a place in culinary history. Thus, according to the legend, the pretzel was born—a baked treat that continues to bring people together at breakfast tables, beer festivals, and afternoon gatherings. Historians point out that the true origins of the pretzel are likely more complex.

Nevertheless, one must admit that the story of a baker who saved his life thanks to three holes in a piece of pastry is far more appealing.
